Water Sampling Program

The water quality at Lake Bernard was monitored yearly from 2007 to 2014. The sampling program was extensive and is described below. Water sampling resumed in 2018 thanks to an environment grant provided by the municipality of La Pêche. The sampling was done for e.coli bacteria** and total phosphorous* at 24 sites in August. Brief History

Water Quality Program 2007-2014

The program was made up of three elements.

1. Monitor Long Term Water Quality

Knowing total phosphorous levels in a lake is critical to tracking changes in a lake ecosystem. If total phosphorous levels are too high in a lake ecosystem, the lake can have blue green algae blooms and weeds will grow more easily.

In 2008, the Lake Association joined the Quebec government’s Volunteer Lake-Monitoring Program (VLMP/RSVL) in order to establish what the level of total phosphorous should be at Lake Bernard to ensure long-term water quality health. (The program's acronym is "RSVL" in French.)

Through the results of extensive sampling for the RSVL conducted by our Association’s over a period of three years, the Environment Committee was able to establish what the level of total phosphorous at Lake Bernard should be to remain healthy over the long term. The cost of sampling results were covered by the RSVL and reported on the RSVL website and the Lake Association website.

Lake water is warm in the top layer and cold in the bottom, and these layers only mix when the temperature of the water is the same - at “ice-out” in April and “freeze-up” in November. To be able to see what the total phosphorous levels were from top to bottom, the Lake Association’s Environment Committee sampled for total phosphorus at three deep spots on the lake near Dome Island, Horseshoe Island and Partridge Island using the Reynold’s Protocol. The Lake Association paid for this sampling analysis and reported it on the Association website.

Since total phosphorous levels in a lake are affected by how much phosphorous comes into the water from the shore, the Lake Association issued the 2012 Shoreline report to show where the shoreline of the lake was developed and where it remained in its natural state. Plants and trees along the shoreline will prevent phosphorous from being washed into the lake from the land.

Finally, the RSVL also asks that Lake Associations monitor every year the transparency levels of their lakes since these levels can be used to track changes in water quality over time. Factors which reduce transparency are algae, zooplankton, water colour and silt. Measuring transparency indirectly also measures algae growth. The Lake Association’s Environment Committee continued to monitor transparency levels in the lake for the RSVL 10 times each summer until 2014, and results were reported on the RSVL website. In 2018, the transparency test was done twice and reported on the RSVL website.

2. Monitor Water Quality for Recreational Purposes

Cottagers want to be assured that the lake is safe for swimming and boating. As such, samples were taken by the Lake Association’s Environment Committee three times each summer at 24 sites shown on the map of sampling sites. Samples were taken to check for fecal coliform or e.coli, total phosphorous and transparency. The analysis of this testing was covered thanks to an environment grant from the municipality of La Pêche, and results were reported on the Lake Association website.

3. Monitor Effects of Pollution Sources on Water Quality

Pollution from septic systems can leak into the water where cottagers swim. To monitor this pollution, the Lake Association checked e.coli levels along the shoreline in front of almost 400 cottages in 2008. In 2011, and for the following three years, water was sampled again in front of one-quarter of the properties on the lake. This sampling was paid for by the Lake Association and reported on the Lake Association website.

* Total Phosphorus (TP) at Lac Bernard should be between 0.00 - 0.010 miligrams per litre (mg/l). At 0.015 mg/l and over, algae blooms are possible and weed growth will increase.

** E. coli bacteria is monitored for swimming and not for drinking water quality. Quebec classifies water quality as excellent when the levels of e. coli are 0-20 and all recreational activities are permitted. Fecal coliform includes e.coli as well as other bacteria.
